Impairment Officer Training

This two-part program is designed for individuals who would like to be certified in conducting workplace drug and alcohol screening and worker assessments.

In addition to HLTPAT005 Collect Specimens for Drug Abuse Testing, this Impairment Officer Training course includes a specialised component that has been specifically created for the industrial sector DAMP policy.

Combined, these two skills will enable your impairment officers to provide a transparent and robust process that ensures all stakeholders are complying with their state OH&S Act.

HLTPAT005 Collect specimens for drugs of abuse testing

Become a workplace drug and alcohol tester.

ITA is one of the very few training providers to deliver the nationally recognised HLTPAT005 Collect Specimens for Drugs of Abuse Testing program delivered and assessed on behalf of Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909 for Workplace Impairment Testing Officers.

The course equips individuals with the skills and knowledge required to confirm collection requirements, prepare clients and equipment, and collect specimens via urine and/or oral and breath testing following the special procedures that apply for drug abuse testing.
The skills and knowledge gained by completing this course would be beneficial for individuals working in collection centres,  hospitals, other health care environments, and workplaces where drug abuse testing takes place.

Educationals

Manage drugs and alcohol with integrity.

ITA has extensive experience in delivering educational materials to large groups of workers, delivering the latest information about the dangers of drugs and alcohol in the workplace and society, as well as regular reminders of your DAMP policy and procedures.

HLTPAT005 training covers the collection of various types of specimens for pathology testing. Depending on the specific type of specimen being collected, different equipment, techniques, and safety precautions may be required. For example, venous blood collection may involve the use of needles and vacutainer tubes, while urine collection may require the use of sterile containers.

HLTPAT005 training includes infection control measures, proper handling and storage of specimens, and transport requirements. This may include using appropriate personal protective equipment, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene, and ensuring proper labeling and documentation of specimens to avoid errors or contamination.

Regulatory requirements relate to privacy, infection control, and safety. These regulations are set out by different bodies, such as the Australian Privacy Principles, the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, and the National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council.

It is recommended that employees receive regular refresher training to ensure they maintain their skills and knowledge, as well as to keep up with any updates or changes in best practices or regulatory requirements.

According to the Australian Qualifications Framework, refresher training should be provided as appropriate to ensure that employees can maintain their competence and keep up-to-date with changes in the field. In addition, the National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council (NPAAC) recommends that accredited pathology laboratories provide regular continuing education and professional development opportunities for their staff to maintain their knowledge and skills.

HLTPAT005 and Impairment Officer Training must be delivered face-to-face.

Impairment Testing Officer Training is a training program that prepares individuals to conduct workplace impairment testing. Impairment testing is a process that aims to identify and assess the extent to which a person’s ability to perform their job safely and effectively may be affected by alcohol, drugs, or other factors that may impair their cognitive or physical functions.

Impairment Testing Officer training typically covers topics such as the legal and regulatory framework for impairment testing, the signs and symptoms of impairment, the testing procedures and protocols, and the interpretation of test results. The training may also cover the different types of testing methods, such as breathalyzers, drug tests, and physical tests, as well as the factors that may affect the accuracy and reliability of the tests.

Impairment Testing Officer training may be required by employers or regulatory authorities in certain industries where safety is a critical concern, such as mining, transport, and construction. The training may also be relevant for healthcare professionals, law enforcement officers, and other professionals who may be involved in workplace impairment testing. ITA delivers this impairment officer training in conjunction with “HLTPAT005: Collect specimens for drugs of abuse testing,”  and it is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required to collect specimens for laboratory testing for drugs of abuse.
