HLTPAT005 Collect Specimens for Drugs of Abuse Testing

SG Health is the industry leader in the delivery of drug and alcohol testing training in accordance with Australian standards AS/NZS4308:2008 and AS4760:2019.

This nationally recognised course is specifically designed for individuals who would like to be certified in conducting workplace drug and alcohol screening. It applies to those who work in collection centres, hospitals, or other health care environments and workplaces where drug abuse screening is present.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be qualified for:

  • Urine and oral fluid specimen collection procedures
  • Testing and detecting drugs in urine via oral and breath testing
  • Laboratory packaging and documentation requirements
  • Breathalyser operation
 

Assessment Requirement

 

A course requirement of HLTPAT005 Collect Specimens for Drugs of Abuse Testing is that students are supervised in a real workplace environment. Each student’s skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace under the supervision of a person currently working in a collection role for at least 9 hours per week.

SG Health trainers are in a unique position to fulfill this important requirement, as our professional trainers are also currently working in the field in collection roles. Students will be fully supported throughout the course, and their work will be fully supervised until they are competent in all areas of their assessment.

Our trainers are accustomed to working in different work environments and have the flexibility to remain at your workplace until all students achieve final competency.

HLTPAT005 Refresher Course

It is highly recommended that workers undertake a refresher training program if a drug and alcohol test has not been conducted within the last 12 months.

SG Health will issue an annual reminder to your workplace to ensure you are fulfilling your obligations and remaining compliant.

Course Outline

The HLTPAT005 Collect Specimens for Drugs of Abuse Testing course applies to individuals who are involved in collecting specimens for drug abuse testing. It will provide individuals with the skills and knowledge required to confirm collection requirements, prepare clients and equipment, and collect specimens via urine and/or oral and breath testing following the special procedures that apply for drug abuse testing in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards, and industry codes of practice. The skills and knowledge gained by completing this course would be beneficial for individuals working in collection centres,  hospitals, other health care environments, and workplaces where drug abuse testing takes place. Students will be required to complete additional supervision of work activities by a person currently working in a collection role for at least 18 hours in a fortnightly time period.

Entry Requirements

 
  • Participants must have the physical capacity to use appropriate equipment and complete assessment tasks.
  • Participants must be able to complete activities in a workplace under the supervision of a person currently in a collection role for at least 18 hours in a two-week time period.

Course Duration

 
  • Blended delivery – 8 hours (minimum); full face-to-face course

Assessment Requirements

 

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.

Students will also be required to complete additional supervision of work activities and submit a third-party observation report.

CERTIFICATE RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS

 
No industry-recommended renewal is identified on the certificate; employers are recommended to consult with stakeholders to identify appropriate training periods.

Assessment Activities

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training sessions include:
 

‍Performance tasks:

 
  • Collect a urine sample for drug abuse testing (non-compliant client).
  • Collect an oral fluid sample for drug abuse testing (tampered sample—problem solving).
  • Collect a breath sample for drug abuse testing.

Documentation:

 
  • Chain of custody forms for a urine sample, an oral fluid sample, and a breath analysis sample

Theory assessment: a written assessment consisting of short answers and multiple-choice questions

Post-course assessment: Complete supervised work activities by completing a third-party observation report by a person currently working in a collection role for at least 18 hours in a fortnightly time period.
